Concerned that the price of crude oil will double in the next year as it has in the last year? Toyota's got you covered. The Nikkei, a major Japanese newspaper, ran a story last night on the next generation Prius. Apparently, the car will feature a solar power generation system which will help drive the air conditioning and other electrical components of the car while the car's on the road. While it was widely reported that the Prius would be the first car to utilize solar technology, I think they're forgetting that the Germans (Mercedes) tried this several years back with a few of their models. The Benz system was designed to ventilate the car and keep it cool while parked though. But getting back to the Toyota system, it was noted that the solar system will be offered on the highest end Prius. In addition, Toyota is said to be working on making the car lighter, to see further gains in fuel economy. Sounds good to me.
Random fun fact: Toyota is planning on selling 450...thousand.. Priuses (Prii?) in 2009....
