Wow. Slow week. But here's some good news for the domestic/Vette fans.
GM is officially claiming a new record for production cars on the Ring. According to their blog, the new ZR1 has achieved a lap time of 7:26.4, putting it three seconds ahead of the GT-R, two seconds ahead of the Carrera GT, just ahead of the fastest Pagani Zonda, and on top of pretty much any street legal car ever built...
GM believes the car may have been faster had it not been so windy (!), meanwhile their test driver believes some turns could have been taken a little quicker as well. Regardless, they were clear to note that the time was achieved on production spec tires and in a production spec car. They also noted that despite being so fast, the Ring time was not central to the development of the car, and that they wanted to ensure the car would drive comfortably on stateside roads.
While there's no official reference for Ring times, GM completed the lap from a rolling start as is customary by nearly all manufacturers seeking to set a new record.
The new ZR1 will go on sale later this year at a starting price of just over $103,000.
