Later this year, Subaru will begin production of its new 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX. The new WRX will feature a detuned version of the 2007 Legacy GT drivetrain. Fitted with a dual exhaust, the car will get about 224hp and 226lb-ft of torque via its classic All Wheel Drive layout.

Modifications are more than skin deep though. The new WRX will feature a redesigned chassis, body construction, and drivetrain in an effort to bring improved performance, refinement and safety to the table.

Subaru also fitted the WRX with a new double-wishbone rear suspension and have mounted the engine lower than before. Although the 4-pot brakes are now gone, the WRX now receives a Vehicle Dynamics Control system for improved safety.

The 2.5 boxer engine is back. The non-turbo engine features a new intake port to improve low end torque and fuel efficiency. The turbocharged WRX features a new intake manifold, intercooler, and turbocharger, all of which are again designed to improve low end torque and fuel efficiency. As before, a manual transmission remains optional and both transmissions - the automatic and manual- have been revised for faster shifting.

Other changes to the car include a wheelbase that's over 3" longer. The steering ratoi now matches the STi's, being reduced from 16.5:1 to 15.0:1. Expect the new WRX to weigh in at about 3175lbs, and stateside pricing to be in the $25,000 range when it hits dealers later this year.
