Nissan Japan has started accepting pre-order reservations for their new GT-R, the R35 GT-R, successor to the R34. As others reported, there are in fact three versions of the car- but they're trims, not different models. As a result, contrary to what other major websites are currently reporting, there are no engine differences between the three. The three trims are the base, black edition, and premium edition. The black edition adds forged wheels from volk-racing matched with soft compound tires from Bridgestone. The premium edition adds a bose soundsystem as well as an advanced alarm system to the black edition. The base car will be priced at 7.7 million JPY. The black edition will be priced at 7.92 million JPY, and the premium edition will be priced at 8.3 million JPY. Translated to US dollars, they'll be getting the base at $66,600, black edition at $68,600, and premium edition at $71,800.
As stated above, Tokyo dealers have been told that the engine output is unchanged between models. Of note, the new engine code is VR38, suggesting that the new VQ-based engine will be a 3.8L Twin Turbo V6. There are six different colors: black, red, titanium gray, dark metal gray, pearl white (30k JPY or about $260), or ultimate metal silver (300k JPY or about $2600).

Interestingly, Japanese dealers are saying that there is no manual transmission model available to order.
It is likely then, that the GT-R will be utilizing a race-oriented dual clutch transmission, as many have guessed, although this is of course not official information- yet.
Reportedly, we may be seeing more info on September 26. The car remains on track for a late October unveiling just prior to the Tokyo Motor Show, and a US debut in mid November in LA. The car will be launched globally by December. Nissan anticipates the first deliveries on these Japanese pre-orders to be made on December 5th, just a few months from now. Japanese dealers are also being told that buyers will not be able to change their minds on their configurations and purchases- they must be sure this is what they want to do.
There's no word on the US arrival, although Nissan USA has said to expect it in the Spring.
There's also no word on weight or engine ouput, although it's expected to run deep in the 400hp range.
Based on the info we have now, it appears that the US model will run beyond $70k -before taxes- but this is as yet unconfirmed.

In other GT-R news, it's been spotted yet again on the 'Ring in Germany undergoing testing. This time observers timed it's laps. It reportedly completed the ring in 7 minutes and 38 seconds, which is extremely fast. To get an understanding of how fast that is, check out this thread here, which gives an overview of the 'Ring as well as listed lap times for a number of cars (see the first reply) To put the GT-R's performance into perspective, the unofficial lap time of the GT-R puts it ahead of the 911 Turbo, Murcielago LP640, Mercedes-McLaren SLR, Corvette Z06, Ford GT, McLaren F1, Ferrari 599, Ferrari F430, and many, many other sports cars. That's the kind of performance we're talking about.
And there's more.
Porsche is currently developing an update to it's 911 Turbo, featuring LED tail-lights and a number of other cosmetic changes. Performance changes are unknown. Throughout the development of the GT-R, Nissan has been testing it against the 911 Turbo, which Nissan said was the performance target. They've even gone as far as to buy 911 Turbos to run against the GT-R as they developed it.

Well the GT-R was on the 'Ring a few days ago, and what else happened to be there? A new, masked, 911 Turbo. Porsche was out doing track work at the same time. What are the odds? Reportedly, the GT-R that Nissan had out there easily kept pace with the 911 Turbo before passing it. Were both stock? Were both to full spec? No one knows. But word from Germany is that the car is the real deal.
