This is epic.

Other news sites were reporting that Nissan dealers in the Tokyo area were taking reservations for the new GT-R, but there info didn't seem accurate. Well, I've sorted it out, and have received independent confirmation. Click forward for the scoop.

Nissan Japan has started accepting pre-order reservations for their new GT-R, the R35 GT-R, successor to the R34. As others reported, there are in fact three versions of the car- but they're trims, not different models. As a result, contrary to what other major websites are currently reporting, there are no engine differences between the three. The three trims are the base, black edition, and premium edition. The black edition adds forged wheels from volk-racing matched with soft compound tires from Bridgestone. The premium edition adds a bose soundsystem as well as an advanced alarm system to the black edition. The base car will be priced at 7.7 million JPY. The black edition will be priced at 7.92 million JPY, and the premium edition will be priced at 8.3 million JPY. Translated to US dollars, they'll be getting the base at $66,600, black edition at $68,600, and premium edition at $71,800.

As stated above, Tokyo dealers have been told that the engine output is unchanged between models. Of note, the new engine code is VR38, suggesting that the new VQ-based engine will be a 3.8L Twin Turbo V6. There are six different colors: black, red, titanium gray, dark metal gray, pearl white (30k JPY or about $260), or ultimate metal silver (300k JPY or about $2600).

Interestingly, Japanese dealers are saying that there is no manual transmission model available to order.
It is likely then, that the GT-R will be utilizing a race-oriented dual clutch transmission, as many have guessed, although this is of course not official information- yet.

Reportedly, we may be seeing more info on September 26. The car remains on track for a late October unveiling just prior to the Tokyo Motor Show, and a US debut in mid November in LA. The car will be launched globally by December. Nissan anticipates the first deliveries on these Japanese pre-orders to be made on December 5th, just a few months from now. Japanese dealers are also being told that buyers will not be able to change their minds on their configurations and purchases- they must be sure this is what they want to do.

There's no word on the US arrival, although Nissan USA has said to expect it in the Spring.
There's also no word on weight or engine ouput, although it's expected to run deep in the 400hp range.
Based on the info we have now, it appears that the US model will run beyond $70k -before taxes- but this is as yet unconfirmed.

In other GT-R news, it's been spotted yet again on the 'Ring in Germany undergoing testing. This time observers timed it's laps. It reportedly completed the ring in 7 minutes and 38 seconds, which is extremely fast. To get an understanding of how fast that is, check out this thread here, which gives an overview of the 'Ring as well as listed lap times for a number of cars (see the first reply) To put the GT-R's performance into perspective, the unofficial lap time of the GT-R puts it ahead of the 911 Turbo, Murcielago LP640, Mercedes-McLaren SLR, Corvette Z06, Ford GT, McLaren F1, Ferrari 599, Ferrari F430, and many, many other sports cars. That's the kind of performance we're talking about.

And there's more.

Porsche is currently developing an update to it's 911 Turbo, featuring LED tail-lights and a number of other cosmetic changes. Performance changes are unknown. Throughout the development of the GT-R, Nissan has been testing it against the 911 Turbo, which Nissan said was the performance target. They've even gone as far as to buy 911 Turbos to run against the GT-R as they developed it.

Well the GT-R was on the 'Ring a few days ago, and what else happened to be there? A new, masked, 911 Turbo. Porsche was out doing track work at the same time. What are the odds? Reportedly, the GT-R that Nissan had out there easily kept pace with the 911 Turbo before passing it. Were both stock? Were both to full spec? No one knows. But word from Germany is that the car is the real deal.

In the coming week we should learn more. As always, StreetSeen will keep you updated.

Japanese blogs are very active, and there's a LOT of talk about this.
I've tried to make through them as best I could (a few examples 1 (http://blog.livedoor.jp/mcrltd/) 2 (http://525i.carstadium.net/) 3 (http://tomosang.blog.shinobi.jp/)) but the jist of it is that the car's performing on a very high level, but is also being priced accordingly. some are surprised about its price (over twice the price of a 350Z) . all have high hopes and expectations for the car.

Updates/clarification, In no particular order. Highlights in bold:

1. official booklet spotted.
http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/2543/gtrbrochure2iu9.jpg
http://img371.imageshack.us/img371/4012/untitledyo7.jpg
2. apparently on wednesday we will know what the front looks like
3. more RUMORS that the gt-r is VERY fast. 11 seconds at 120+mph in the 1/4 fast. Not just in a line though. Faster than a 911 turbo around road courses fast.
4. Official name = CBA-R35. This is successor to the BNR-R34. Also note that the Skyline range split to the CPV35 (g35) and V36 for the new G35/37. But everyone on streetseen already knew that this isn't a Skyline, right? :squint:
5. conflicting info on when deliveries start. some say dec 5, others dec 6. but you get the idea. very precise. most materials indicate dec 6 for JDM orders.
6. official unveil is Oct 24. That's when we'll know about the interior, engineering, performance, etc. That's when Nissan will talk about it.
7. conflicting info on the tranny, but all reports point to a sequential manual, probably with two clutches. the only thing known for sure is that nissan is only offering the car in an automated tranny OF SOME KIND. Japanese dealers are under the impression that its a 6 speed sequential. Japanese news sources and some bloggers are reporting that its a 7 speed sequential. All agree it's mated to the latest version of ATTESA ETS PRO.
8. Apparently, Nissan also sees this car as not just representing themselves against their rivals, but also their country as well. It's that serious to them. Maybe this is why the boost gauge on some of their prototpyes goes past 22psi?
9. conflicting info, but japanese blogs are reporting that the engine is about 480hp, with actual displacement being 3.798L, compression ratio =10.0. bore = 95.5mm, stroke = 88.4mm. Supposedly the engine has achieved ULEV 2005 regulations. None of this is confirmed. RUMOR has it that the engine is NOT based on the VQ, and is instead based on a 3.5L v8 engine Nissan has had... with two less cylinders and more displacement with tons of improvements throughout. Supposedly, use of magnesium and titanium is extensive in the engine. Also interesting, apparently from the factory, JDM customers can specify a titanium muffler.
10. CLARIFICATION ON PRODUCTION: bloggers are now reporting that total output = 1,000 units per month. Japan output = 500 per month. This is half my estimates.
11. SERVICING NEWS: apparently nissan has established GT-R authorized centers at 160 nissan-owned locations throughout Japan. RUMOR has it that servicing the car elsewhere will cost you your warranty. so far as I know, US Federal laws forbid that. also interesting to note is that in Japan, the manufacturer owns dealers whereas here, dealers are independently owned. it's likely that nissan may restrict who gets GT-Rs, but on service, Nissan will probably just involve nissan corporate more into taking care of customer issues. Some American enthusiasts who've expressed interest into the GT-R have been sent surveys, in which some questions asked them about this.

unless something big happens, expect the next major update on Wednesday.
