Went exploring today. Havent been on much of north shore yet but South shore seems to actually be in pretty good condition. Theres a spot with gravel in the road and there are a few places with sand and a pothole but otherwise it seems ok. Highway seems ok too, just a few spots to look out for and another pothole or two. West seems ok. Overall it's better than I thought it would be.

Thats what Isaid when people where talking about avoiding south shore riding..lol sure istill wish we had roads like scenic drive hill but hey it wasn't that bad.....north shore not much minus a pond at salt river marina entrance lol would deff cause a CAI to suck in H20.

Ok so south shore isnt so bad and the highway isnt horrible. But all the roads leading to them are screwed up. My car is picking up all kinds of new rattles and the front end of my truck is about to fall apart. I have to replace my whole rack and pinion, tie rods, ball joints ect. True the roads could be worse but they are still far from being acceptable. And the biggest reason its as bad as it is and only getting worse is that people just accept it as the norm. When i get home to my computer i will post up the figures of the ammount of money allotted to the VI government to "maintain" the roads... Its ridiculous how much money they get yearly when you see no real improvement. Besides my wapa bill, the roads are my biggest complaint about st croix.

It funny in america they continuously replace not repair the roads and I don't see anything wrong with the roads they fixing (Job security I guess). And every time I visit home I say DAM!! these roads are terrible and St. Croix gets millions in Federal money to fix roads. Why people just accept it as the norm?

No arguments from me.
As far as why the roads arent maintained and what the officials are doing about it,
I don't think you have to look any further than threads here (eg meeting with the gov, track theft 1 and 2) and the things we end up talking about (eg the value of education) to see the breakdown in community values.
The belief that this breakdown is somehow limited to the public and not the government is as ignorant as the population that holds the view.
Instead of pointing fingers the thing to do is accept responsibility, both as an individual and as a group, and figure out solutions.
But in the mean time, if anyone needs a road to drive and chill with, see above.

Yup, South Shore road is the MARVEL of the St. Croix road infrastructure! It was built "right" and how many years ago? No repairs have been necessary. I have lived on St. Croix long enough to remember the old South Shore road.

So have I ,I remember when that hill after haypenny going west you hit that doing 70 you'd get your car airborn lol but true south shore has stay'd sweet. But its not at all because engineering..most people have no need to use south shore as much which make's for a great place to drive. Other places that are commonly used need to be a bit stronger if not alot stronger to take the beating fro mthe environment, to humans.:dunno:

 south shore roads longevity is solely because of engineering. VI paving didnt pave that road. DIVI brought all stateside contractors and equipment to build south shore road. Not only has it outlasted every other road on island, it didnt take them 3 years to build it. It was done right. maybe not to stateside standards but it was done much better than the whole "lay asphalt over sand" deal that VI paving does.So have I ,I remember when that hill after haypenny going west you hit that doing 70 you'd get your car airborn lol but true south shore has stay'd sweet. If I remember correctly talking to Mr. Pitts when he was alive that had part to do with the laying of south shore. It was a very common way of doing it. Yet alot easier than how they do the other roads. Go figure.

 Exactly, I remember when I watched them prep for that road, I could tell this is different, this road is done right its going to last. Could it have something to do with the construction of DIVI? Talk to MONGO he's the expert now VIZUKI.
