F1 is one of the largest and most expensive sports in the world.

It is sanctioned by the FIA (like how basketball is sanctioned by the NBA in the US). The FIA sanctions many of the most popular different types of racing worldwide, in over 100 countries, F1 being the highest end form of racing the FIA is involved with.

Like many sports, F1 works by season. Each season, there are several races (usually 15-20 or so, each called a Grand Prix) that a number of teams (about 20 give or take) compete for, with two cars each. Each team is competing for points toward two championships: constructors (team) and drivers (individual driver). At the end of the season, the constructor with the most points wins, and the driver with the most points wins.

Each team is a massive operation. Every team has a factory where scientists in areas from material science to aerodynamics and fluid dynamics, to engineers, mechanics, drivers, financiers, marketers, work together to make the year possible. F1 is expensive as many teams spend around US$300-500 million per season to be competitive. There's a lot more money to F1 than that though, as sponsors pay very large amounts of money, as do tracks, media, and so on.

F1 is like no other racing in the world. This thread is dedicated to it.

Many pics, videos, and comments to come...

The Monaco Grand Prix takes place in the Spring in the principality of Monaco. Monaco is a city-state that is located on the South of France, just ten miles west of the border with Italy. Not far to the west of Monaco is Cannes and Nice.

Monaco is commonly called the crown jewel of the F1 calendar. First started in 1929, today it encapsulates a lot of the glamor and glitz that is Formula1. As a race, the Monaco GP is very challenging. The circuit consists of closed public roads and while it isn't very long in absolute length, it is very dangerous. There's often little to no runoff and walls are everywhere. There are uphill and downhill sections, and even a tunnel to go through. It requires a lot of commitment to be fast here. It's one thing to drive quickly next to grass, it's different to do it next to concrete. It's a very high downforce track where you really depend on downforce (as opposed to mechanical grip) to perform well. Because passing is so difficult here, qualifications are extremely important.

Qualifications work like what we import enthusiasts would call a time attack session. There are three Qualifying sessions. In the first, the track is open to everyone. The slowest drivers are eliminated in Q1. Then the next slowest drivers in Q2, then the remaining drivers compete for pole position in Q3. The order of qualifying / elimination comprises the starting grid for the race on Sunday. End Q3 with the fastest lap and you get pole position. That means you start the race in lead which at Monaco, is extremely important. The man on pole has a very good chance of winning the Monaco GP.

Enough talk. Time for some pics.

This is a welcome thread... Specially since it involves the most technologically advance road racing cars in the world.. I remember when they started using pneumatic engine valves, when they had active suspensions (those pesky Williams), when engines used to rev up to 21,000 RPM, and they began the automated shifted transmission trend.. and those cars out brake any car in the world..

This year, so far, Redbull has the number on everybody... for now, at least... I will upload a few videos later..

I want to go to Montreal, but I would like for us to get a USA Grand Prix (with no tire fiascos again)...
