If you didn't know, the St Thomas car show is split into two days, on the first day the sound show/competition is held and on the second day, the show for show cars is held. This morning we bring you the pics from the first day of competition <!--more-->

The competitors were organized in a format similar to the last show on St Croix, where cars were lined up into three rows. The cars present were all competing in either SPL (volume) or SQL (quality). Judging was done by the Mobile Electronics Competition Association, which came down from Nashville, TN.

The cars were lined up for show where judges went around to demo sound quality and review various aspects of the car installations. For instance, judges would give a competitor the opportunity to present his/her setup while the judge then proceeded with evaluation.

The spread of competition was tight, with an average setup leading you to understand that nothing is excessive in this game. If you've never been before, let me put it this way. A major road at 10am has a 'loudness' of about 80db. Hearing damage from long term exposure starts at about 85-90db. A jackhammer from 3ft away is about 100db. Hearing damage from short term exposure starts at about 120db. It will hurt at 130db. A rifle shot from 3ft is about 140db.
The average competitors were easily deep in the 130db range with quite a few going past 140/141db.
<img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t193/streetseen/STT/SummerSlam07/IMG_4877.jpg" />
Protection was required, which is a good thing, because at that point, some odd things begin to happen to you. For instance, at 140db, your vocal cords start to move on their own... and by 143db, you will feel like you've been tackled. At 144db, your nose will itch on its own. By this point, raw exposure for even a short amount of time is highly dangerous.
<img src="http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t193/streetseen/STT/SummerSlam07/IMG_4929.jpg" />
This is how loud the competitors were. In and out there were a number of well designed sound systems as well, with some cars utilizing a wall of speakers.
