Most manufacturers wait for a major car show, but not Honda. Today they fully unveiled their all new 2008 Accord Coupes and Sedans. Although we've seen them on the streets before, now we get all the details.<!--more-->

Let's start with power.

The new Accord sedan will offer two 2.4L 4 cylinder engines, one with 180hp and the other with 200hp. Either can be mated to a 5speed manual transmission (standard) or 5 speed automatic transmission (optional). On the high end, a 3.5L V6 producing 273hp will be offered with a 5 speed automatic.

For the coupe, the options are between the 200hp 4 cylinder and the 273hp 3.5l V6. On that 2 door however, you can opt for a 6 speed manual if you go for the V6.

In terms of economy, both 4 cylinders get 21/31mpg while the V6 delivers 17-19/25-29 highway.

Handling and Braking.

As I'll get into in a moment, the new Accord features a chassis with an improved rigidity. It also features four wheel disc brakes for all models, which is good, as weight is predictably higher on the new Accord. Honda says its up 'only 5%'. The last Accord weighed roughly 3150lbs depending on the trim, so taking that as an average and plugging it into our calculators we see the new Accords starting weight to come in at about 3300lbs for the 4 cylinders.

How big is it?

Size wise, the sedan is about 3" longer, 1" wiwder and 1" taller. Although the car is bigger, rigidity is up 20% as a result of an increased usage of high tesnidle steel. The coupe is 2.9" longer, 1.4" wider, and 0.7" taller. Compared with the sedan, the coupe is 3.4" shorter, 1.7" shorter in height, and carries the same width.

Everything else...

The new interior is completely redone, being over an inch wider and claiming the largest interior in class (for the sedan). This is an impressive claim, especially compared to the cavernous Altima. On safety, the new Accords feature dual stage dual threshold driver and passenger's airbags. As you'd expect, new body construction allows for more protection in the event of an accident. The seatbelts feature pre-tensioners and load limiters this time around, and the car gets traction control (which Honda calls Vehicle Stability Assist) standard. No word on whether or not you'll be able to turn these nannies off.

To keep passengers entertained, all Accords will feature Mp3 compatibility, an auxiliary input for the sound system, and steering wheel audio controls. Optional will be an Active Noise Control system to help reduce road noise while the car is on the road. The sound system will also (optionally) include a subwoofer linked to a head unit that features a multi-line display CD/MP3 player.

While we have no word yet on price, I expect base pricing to start with a 2. As soon as we have more information I'll pass it along. For now though, check out these official shots.
