So apparently, the state of Massachusetts is now submitting a bill for legislative review to ban aftermarket exhausts. Yes, you read that right. To put it in the lawmaker's words, they intend on banning the install of "an exhaust system which has been modified in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the exhaust." Umm... yeah.

The good news is the law is being fought by the aftermarket industry, SEMA. (yes the same group that puts on the epic car show every year) SEMA's been delaying the law on the basis that it doesn't provide the police officers with any standard of how to enforce the law, leaving it to the subjective judgment of the police officer on the street.

SEMA's case is noted <a href="http://www.sema.org/Main/ArticleDetail.aspx?fc_c=941059x2039142x55943991&amp;co ntentID=58013" target="_blank">here</a>, and elaborated on their website <a href="http://www.semasan.com/main/main.aspx?id=62241" target="_blank">here</a>, where they note their counterarguments:
"

<strong>We Urge You to Contact the Members of the Joint Transportation Committee (List Below) Immediately to Request Their Opposition to H.B. 3574</strong>
<ul>
<li>H.B. 3574 ignores the fact that aftermarket exhaust systems are designed to make vehicles run more efficiently without increasing emissions.</li>
<li>H.B. 3574 does not supply law enforcement with a clear standard to enforce, allowing them to make subjective judgments on whether or not a modified exhaust system is in violation.</li>
<li>H.B. 3574 fails to recognize that aftermarket exhaust systems offer increased performance, which can make a vehicle safer by improving its ability to merge, pass, travel uphill, etc.</li>
<li>H.B. 3574 would make it difficult for hobbyists to replace factory exhaust systems with more durable, better performing options.</li>
<li>H.B. 3574 would only exclude “antique motor cars” defined as those vehicles over 25-years old which are used exclusively for exhibitions, club activities, parades, etc."</li>
</ul>
If you know anyone in the MA, have them email their congress people. It'll take all of ten seconds and will help pressure them against this ridiculous excuse for legislation. Let's hope we don't have to fight the same fight here....

If thats the case just keep your stock exhaust pan and piping and add a "cutout" They come in two forms , electronic and manual. Just press the button and you get a free flowing exhasut anytime you want. when the pigs are closing in on you just close it.
