Quite a few people see the 3 series as becomming more of a luxury touring car and less of the lightweight compact sporting car it once was. They might be pleased to know that BMW is moving downmarket with a new "Ultimate Driving Machine" - the 1 series.

Allegedly packing BMW's highly potent turbocharged straight six N54 engine (as seen in the 335i outputting about 320hp) BMW appears to be bringing some heat with its new lower-end sports coupe.

In these pictures, captured this week from a photoshoot in Germany, it appears that the new 1 series is very close to launch. With pricing likely in the $30k range stateside, the car could be a solid seller- if customers buy the looks. For enthusiasts though, the car seems very attractive, bringing a lot of refinement and performance to the $30k segment, indirectly competing with cars ranging from the RX8 to otherwise 3 series competitors such as the G37 and IS350.

Enthusiasts be warned though- if this car does in fact come over with an N54, 400+hp will only be a couple thousand dollars away. And if its weight is kept down to the 3300lb range, it will not take a very skilled tuner to extract a lot of performance out of it....
