Robert Kubica, 22 a pilot for BMW-Sauber's Formula1 team, experienced a horrific accident at last weekend's Canada Grand Prix. Although the cause isn't clear- some point to steering failure while others believe he was forced off the racing line and into the grass- the results were crystal clear. Moving at over 180mph leading into a turn to setup for a hairpin, Kubica's car left the course and went airborne before striking a concrete barrier...head on.
<!--more-->
Although he attempted to slow down, only so much could be done before he was off the course. In what could only be described as a miracle, Kubica's car managed to avoid falling into oncoming traffic on the opposite side of the hairpin. Then, after hitting the wall the car was thrown backwards- narrowly missing other cars setting themselves up for the hairpin. After rolling and hitting the opposing wall Kubica's car came to rest, where he was alive, with only a concussion and a sprained ankle.
I can only hope that the lessons from safety in Formula1 get applied to more street cars.
