As you might recall in 2006, Nissan changed its Sentra platform to the C platform for its newly redone Sentra. A year later they bring us the sports models of the lineup, the SE-R and SE-R Spec V. These are the cars that Nissan brings to battle against the Civic Si, Mazdaspeed3, and Cobalt SS.

For 2007 the SE-R comes in two trims: SE-R and SE-R Spec V. Let's start with the specs.

The original front wheel drive 07 Sentra is powered by the MR20DE, a 2.0L 4cyl engine rated at 140hp @ 5,100rpm and 147lb-ft of torque @ 4,800rpm. In the SE-R variants, this engine was scrapped for a2.5L variant, which outputs 177hp @ 6,000rpm (SE-R) or 200hp @ 6,600rpm (SE-R Spec V) . Torque is up to 172lb-ft @ 2,800rpm for the SE-R and 180lb-ft for the SE-R Spec V. Like their predecessors and the cars on which they're based, the new SE-R and Spec-V remain FWD.

To get that power to the ground, the engines are mated to either a close ratio six speed manual or Nissan's Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The latter of which essentially provides nearly unlimited gear ratios to match the engine output. The net effect is an optimization of efficiency and power- either a minimum rpm may be maintained for a certain speed, or if maximum power is demanded, the transmission can continuously spin at redline while optimizing the gears to maximize power transmission. It feels strange to drive, but it works. Should you chose to row the gears yourself, steering wheel mounted paddle shifters let you chose between eight predetermined ratios to give you the feel of shifting on your own.
The suspension of the SE-R receives much more agressive tuning, maintaining its independent front coil layout with rear torsian beams. Steering is now speed-sensitive. Optionally, the car may be equipped with a Helical Limited Slip Differential to optimize traction at all times.

Brakes are upgraded from the 11" front rotors with drums at rear in the base Sentra to to 11.7"F /11.5"R disc brakes on the SE-R. The Spec V carries 12.6"F/11.5"R brakes. Both new cars come with anti lock braking and Electronic Brake Force Distribution, which ensures even and stable braking

Wheels are now upgraded to 17" SE-R Specific wheels and tires . On the outside, the SE-Rs receive a unique boy kit altough exterior dimensoins remain unchanged.
On the inside, Nissan's made a number of revisions to liven up the experience.

Seating is bucket style with red stiching, red seatbelts, and a red SE-R logo. Aluminum pedals, lether wrapped shift knob and steering wheel and a two gauge cluster featuring an accelerometer and an oil pressure readout round out the sporting makevoer.

To provide additional entertainment the car comes with a number of options including a 340-watt eigh speaker sound system. Convenience wise- the car comes with Nissan's outstanding intelligent-key system. This "key" really amounts to a pod that you keep with you. With it on you, the car recognizes you and will unlock and start for you- no key-turning required.
<img src="http://www.nissannews.com/multimedia/nissan2007/800px/07-MY07Sentra-11.jpg" />
On the safety side, the car comes with dual stage advanced airbags, occupant classification system, front seat mounted air bags, side curtain air bags, active head restraints, and zone body construction.
But in all actuality, its about the drive here. And on this front, Nissan promises an engaging experience unlike any SE-R before it. Tuned on the nurburgring against Nissan's toughest competitors such as the Civic SI, Nissan claims this to be the highest performing car in class, at least on the track. While we know that it's straight line speed may fall short of other cars such as the Mazdaspeed 3, only time will tell how well this car does when presented a road coarse. Even if it doesn keep up on a road coarse though, will it be enough? Will this car win the hearts of enthusiasts? Only time will tell. In the meanwhile, we'd love to hear your thoughts.
